Revisiting the Promise of SOA

In early 2006, this firm introduced a white paper titled, “The ‘E’ in SOA.” The premise of that white paper was that organizations, in their rush to adopt SOA, were doing so without considering their then- current enterprise architecture (EA) efforts. So, a full two years later, the questions that need to be asked are: have organizations gotten any better at developing their SOA plans and are they executing those SOA plans any better than two years ago? Today, as back then, news about SOA is front and center in every IT industry or trade publication. The SOA concept has rapidly accelerated its growth and acceptance in just about every corner of the IT universe, regardless of industry. It is the de-facto approach for creating the elusive “agile” enterprise. Yet, questions persist about the efficacy of these strategies and implementations.
